Alfa Laval Innovation Workshop accelerates Sustainable Shipping in South East Asia

Focusing on the opportunities and challenges for the shipping industry globally and in South East Asia, Alfa Laval is hosting leading industry experts and senior executives for its inaugural innovation workshop in Singapore.

The Sustainable Shipping Innovation Workshop will bring together some of the industry’s brightest minds to accelerate ideas and decarbonization strategies for achieving net-zero emissions while catering to the growing demand for shipping and transport.

2030: A critical milestone for Singapore

Singapore is swiftly becoming a hub for sustainable shipping innovation, with pioneering research and development initiatives, investments in green port infrastructure, and collaborations with leading industry players.

Singapore's maritime industry is not merely responding to global directives such as the IMO 2030 and 2050 goals; it is taking proactive steps to align itself with the IMO's targets and surpass them where possible.

Reduction in GHG Emissions: Singapore's maritime industry is actively working toward achieving a 20% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030, with an ambition to strive even higher, targeting a 30% reduction. This endeavour involves the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and innovative operational practices, such as slow steaming, to curb emissions from the extensive shipping traffic that traverses its waters.

Carbon Intensity Reduction: A 40% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 is an integral part of Singapore's sustainability agenda. This objective is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of vessels operating in its ports, reducing emissions per unit of cargo handled, and reinforcing Singapore's commitment to greener maritime operations.

Alternative Low-GHG Fuels: Singapore is at the forefront of developing infrastructure and policies to promote the use of alternative low-GHG fuels in the shipping industry. With the aspiration to incorporate at least 10% alternative fuels into the global energy mix by 2030, Singapore is actively exploring options such as LNG bunkering, hydrogen, and sustainable biofuels to power vessels visiting its ports.

With its invitation-only Sustainable Shipping Innovation Forum, Alfa Laval aims to drive change together with relevant stakeholders through partnerships and collaborations for a carbon-free future.

“We redefine the onboard energy landscape, maximize vessel efficiency and minimize environmental impact, enabling a more sustainable world and staying competitive in shipping,” said Nadine Letzner, Marine Division Manager for South East Asia at Alfa Laval.

“Innovation and collaboration are key on the journey to 2030 and beyond,” she said.
